William Gray founded The Smokestacks. Despite BBC airtime, single releases and major label interest, the band never released an album.
Gray decided to go solo. In 2009 'None of the Above' was released. Reviewers were impressed, drawing comparisons with respected songwriters including Elliott Smith. In addition to a BBC request for an interview/live session, None Of The Above was voted a Vibrations Magazine album of the year.
'Vertical Wealth' (2010) was also a Vibrations Magazine album of the year, with BBC and US college radio airtime secured too.
2012's 'Casual Observer' again resulted in repeated BBC radio play and another Vibrations Magazine thumbs up in their yearly album countdown.
After moving to Hangzhou, 'Wensan Rd' was released in 2013, winning new plaudits within the Chinese music scene as well as praise from That's China magazine.
2015 saw Gray join Medic Records, the label organizing well-received shows throughout China. EP 'Tish' was released to positive acclaim, BBC airplay and over 14000 plays on Xiami. The year culminated in a show supporting the internationally revered Jon Gomm.
2016 has proven another busy year with the release of album 'Flounce' and EP 'Seine', resulting in more BBC radio play and complimentary media coverage.
